Application delayed by saving trees

Application delayed by saving trees

I followed the instructions, filled out everything, checked and rechecked.  So needless to say, I was surprised when I opened a large envelope from the state to see my application and SASE with a note that I needed to do it all over again.  There was a letter inside and after reading it, I realized how dumb this system is.

The reason my application was returned…..I printed 2 pages per sheet, “the application was the incorrect size.”  Here I am thinking I did a good thing by printing a perfectly readable application on less paper (more or less because then there would be less paperwork to lose), and I get penalized.  Fine, great, I’ll redo it and send it back, my mistake.

Hidden at the bottom of the included letter was a note saying my submission date will be the day they receive the new copy.  Here’s the deal, they received the first copy on Feb 18th, now it won’t get “marked” until at least March 9th.  Add on the 2 week delay for processing and I’m looking at maybe getting a response by the end of March.  I would be surprised at this by-the-book ineptitude if it were a university or hospital, but, you should sit down for this, it’s from the government.  I know, I know, you are shocked, I heard your gasp, but it’s true!

NOTE:  I’m sure they are doing the best they can, but I have yet to have a smooth/easy experience with anything state related so my view may be a little skewed.

If the Unemployment people hire the unemployed there would be less unemployment.

If the Unemployment people hire the unemployed there would be less unemployment.

The title may be confusing, but it is the truth.

As I have mentioned before, I am currently job-free.  Like thousands of other Massachusetts citizens I find myself logging on every week to file.  Being able to file online is truly a godsend these days.  When I tried to call the Dept of Unemployment Assistance (DUA), I was repeatedly told by a lovely recorded voice that there was no one available to take my call, but my call means alot so I should try back later.  Isn’t that sweet?  Truth be told, I have spoken more to that lovely voice than my own sister in the past week.

What I find ironic is that if the DUA would actually hire some of the unemployed in Mass, everyone would win.  The DUA wouldn’t be fielding calls from frustrated people that have been stuck on hold for 41 minutes (true story) and those in need would be getting an income and job experience.

The same goes for the MSP (unemployment health insurance).  When I called last week, they were still processing applications from January.  How many of those applications belong to people who desperately need a job and health insurance?  If the DUA/MSP puts the effort to train and hire 10 people, the entire system will be helped/improved.  The unemployed will be able to focus on getting back on their feet and not wasting their time on hold listening to a lovely lady tell them how they are appreciated.

What can I say, this is my optimistically naive view of how some things should go.  I don’t doubt that there are many issues I am not considering, but wouldn’t it be nice to hear some good news from the DUA?
